Social media is an essential aspect of your business marketing strategy. However, with all the “noise” out there on each of the various platforms, how do you get your message across without being tuned out or turning people off?
The truth is, most people are hip to all the ways we market ourselves, our businesses, and our services. Most people (you included) can see a pitch coming a mile away. With that in mind, here are a few tactics that will help get you closer to your social media marketing goals:
Social media marketing tip #1: Share something of value
If you have information or tips that your audience will appreciate, be generous and share what you know. This will establish you as an authority on your subject matter. For instance, if you sell specialty interior paint, offer a “how-to” on high-end paint finishes for your DIY audience. This could lead into a more extensive article or e-book with even more information, for which you can ask for an email in exchange for a free download.
Social media marketing tip #2: Be social – encourage engagement
Social media is, well, social. The very nature of being social requires interaction. Your messaging should not be a one-way street; ask your followers to share their opinions on topics related to your niche and find out more about what makes them tick. This will help you hone your marketing as you will know more about who you are marketing to. Plus, it will show that you are a real person and not just a nameless, faceless, marketing machine or chatbot.
Social media marketing tip #3: Lay off the sales and self-promotion
If there is one thing that makes people run for the hills, it’s a sales pitch. Same goes for those companies that are constantly pushing themselves and their products on you at every turn. When posting, keep your sales-related posts to about 20% of all your posts. Mix in humor, subject matter expertise, curated influencer content, and other things that might be interesting to your audience.
Social media marketing tip #4: Connect with social media influencers
Social influencers are those people on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube who have hordes of followers who hang on their every word. If you can get one of them to promote your product, you’ll instantly have all those adoring fans wanting what you’ve got – without you having to sell a thing. Choose influencers who share your ideals and aesthetic. It’s about getting your product into the orbit of someone who is trusted by their audience and convincing them to promote your brand. Spend some time seeking out individuals who align with your brand ideals and have a solid strategy planned out with which to woo them, whether that is trade for product, cash incentives or life experiences.
