Annapolis is a mecca for sailing enthusiasts. Known as the sailing capital of America, people flock here from all over the world to experience what we’re lucky enough to live every single day.
Whether you are new to the area or born and raised here, if you’re hoping to get started with sailing in Annapolis, we’re here to show you how!
Here are five ways to get started sailing in Annapolis:
1 Take an E-Learning Course.
The American Sailing Association offers a free online course that you can take any time and at your leisure. The e-class is only 45 minutes, and you’ll learn all the basics, including parts of the boat, sailing terms, safety tips, and suggestions on what to wear and recommended gear to pick up before your first sailing lesson. Even if you’re just curious, what you’ll learn in this course will give you a certain level of comfort aboard any boat.
2 Sign Up for an On-The-Water Clinic at a Boat Show.
True – there are more boat shows in Annapolis than pretty much anywhere else. In the spring, check out the Spring Sailboat Show, and in the fall, the US Sailboat Show. These shows are an excellent opportunity to learn more about boats and sailing and to participate in a range of sailing clinics and activities. Sailors of all levels can find courses to challenge them. The instructors are certified, and the experience you’ll gain is priceless.
3 Go to an Open House.
If you’re just dipping your toe in the water, an open house is a great way to find out whether sailing is for you. Most sailing schools offer open houses now and then, and it’s a good way to meet the instructors and find out what sailing life is all about. Call around to local sailing schools and ask about upcoming open houses.
4 Take an Introductory Sailing Course.
Though it’s still at a fundamental level, an introductory sailing course gives you direct, hands-on experience that is a prerequisite to more advanced courses. Check out some of the local sailing schools to sign up. Some of the top sailing schools in Annapolis include Annapolis Sailing School, the Sailing Academy, the United States Naval Academy, and Ultimate Watersports.
5 Take a Flotilla Sailing Vacation.
The American Sailing Association offers flotilla charter vacations in locations like Greece, Tahiti, Croatia, Turkey, Belize, and beyond. You will be on a boat with a qualified skipper and a group of like-minded others at all levels of sailing expertise. You will have the opportunity to learn as you experience exotic locales and meet new friends. So, what’s a flotilla? It’s a group of chartered vessels that share an itinerary, kind of like an ocean convoy.
