At my Annapolis Office we take pride in creating meaningful relationships with each and every one of our members. This month we are highlighting Jason Johnson of Johnson Law, an estate planning and elder law practice here in Annapolis. We hope you enjoy getting to know Jason as much as we have!
Tell us about your company and what you do?
Johnson Law is an estate planning and elder law practice. I work with clients at all stages of life, but my focus is on those at or near retirement years. That stage of life raises special concerns around estate and incapacity planning; long-term care planning, legal planning around distributions from tax-deferred retirement plans. I also advise provide legal counsel to estate and trust fiduciaries.
How did you get started in your industry?
I developed an interest in estate planning while attending law school. It became the focus of my studies and later the focus of my legal practice. Elder law is a closely related area of law that cuts across several traditional areas of legal practice. I really enjoy working with clients and financial services professionals to resolve complex planning concerns.
What is something about your business that most people do not know?
Most people think estate planning is simply identifying how property is transferred at death. In reality, it goes much further than that. The work of estate planning practitioners can prepare for incapacity, minimize transfer and income taxes, promote eligibility for long-term care benefits, protect assets from creditors and others, and much more.
Where do you see your business in five years?
I expect to continue to grow organically as we reach more and more potential clients and their professional advisors.
Tell me about yourself.
I live here in Annapolis with my wife and two girls. Before starting my law practice I was a police officer for 20 years. And before that I was a career firefighter and paramedic. I attended law school in the first few years of my police career, with the specific goal of eventually opening an estate planning law practice.
What types of activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy almost everything Annapolis has to offer, especially boating and playing golf. I also enjoy traveling.
What is your favorite place to eat in Annapolis? Favorite dish there?
El Toro Bravo, now on Riva Road… Pollo Ranchero.
Why did you choose My Annapolis Office and how has working here helped your business?
I knew I wanted to have an office in an office suite environment that provided the luxury of reception and management staff and meeting rooms. I also wanted something that was easy to reach and comfortable for clients. I previously tried another office suites solution here in Annapolis, but was not pleased. With the recommendation of a neighbor and friend, I gave My Annapolis Office a look and have been very pleased with that decision.
