Big changes are on the horizon for Anne Arundel County. County Executive Steve Schuh has proposed a $19 million cut in property taxes which, if enacted, will be the first major tax cut of a Maryland jurisdiction in many years.
“This is an exciting time for me,” Schuh told the five residents. “I have a real opportunity to address these challenges and make Anne Arundel County,” as he said thousands of times during the campaign and since, “the best place to live, work and start a business.”
In the county’s 2016 budget proposal, Schuh has asked each county department to cut spending by 5%. He has also put a freeze on hiring in Anne Arundel County. However, there are some additions to the budget in the area of “quality of life infrastructure,” such as additional bike trails, boat ramps, two major additional parks and a tennis center in Millersville. “The Millersville Tennis Center will be an important amenity that will serve the entire county’s recreation needs,” Schuh states.
The County Executive’s other areas of focus are schools and public safety. He plans to build more and smaller high schools in the future. “Anne Arundel County high schools have grown too large and a new high school is a critical necessity. The Crofton area has been waiting more than 20 years for their county to make this commitment,” Schuh says.
While some residents remain skeptical as to how more can be done with less money, most residents are excited for what the future holds.
