Meet Suzanne Martin of Annapolis Immigration Justice Network
The National Council of Nonprofits says it best: “Nonprofits play a fundamental role in creating more equitable and thriving communities.” Whether you or your business is involved in a nonprofit, your impact helps bring people together.
Recently, we sat down with Suzanne Martin, a dedicated local leader who helps run the Annapolis Immigration Justice Network. Through our conversation with Martin, Suzanne, we learned how her work supports neighbors in Anne Arundel County and beyond.
About the Annapolis Immigration Justice Network
The Annapolis Immigration Justice Network (AIJN) is a local nonprofit supporting immigrant neighbors in Anne Arundel County. The organization, led by Suzanne Martin, walks alongside families as they navigate the immigration system. Since 2017, they’ve provided over $100,000 in direct legal funding, helping 77 asylum seekers and visa applicants secure full legal representation for their federal immigration cases.
Key programs include:
- Legal Fund – Supporting asylum seekers with legal representation
- Accompaniment Program – Volunteers help with immigration hearings and consultations
- Case Management – Helping clients navigate the immigration process
How Did You Get Started, Martin Suzanne?
Our group began three years ago. Before starting Annapolis Immigration Justice Network, I was a stand-up paddleboard instructor and a volunteer with the Lighthouse Shelter in Annapolis. We wanted to help immigrant and asylum-seeking neighbors but didn’t have a clear plan. Over time, we saw a huge need for trusted legal representation and support, so Annapolis Immigration Justice Network was born.
What’s Something Most People Don’t Know?
We’re proud to have formed a partnership with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) to help unaccompanied children arriving in Anne Arundel County. Not only do we serve individuals, but we also help unify families. Recently, we were featured in the Capital Gazette for our annual Border Crossings fundraiser — an event full of stories, music, and art to support immigrants and celebrate due process for all.
Where Do You See AIJN in 5 Years?
Our vision is to keep growing our partnerships and expanding our legal fund to serve even more residents in Anne Arundel County.
A Little About Suzanne Martin

What Do You Enjoy Outside of Work?
I love SUP and race events during the summer. It keeps me active and connected to the community — just like our mission with Annapolis Immigration Justice Network.
Favorite Local Bite?
I love Joss – my favorite is their Crunchy Ebi Roll!
